About the creator

Hi, I'm Lou, and I built mybirdID.
I share my home with five conures who run my life: Rio (13), Caesar (11), Rolo (8), Toto (7) and Pixie (5). Caesar was my first bird. He's been terrorising me for nine years and is the reason this whole thing exists!
In a previous life I was a primary school teacher, but these days I'm a Data Engineer, having started out doing front end development and slowly progressed through the stack.
I've been volunteering with Birdline Parrot Rescue since 2020. I started as a rehoming officer, doing welcome calls, interviews, and the occasional home check. These days I mostly write up and list available birds on their website. While we do our best to reunite found birds with their owners, it's where I see how often this just doesn't happen because it's impossible to find where they came from.
When I got Caesar, he was 2 years old. I knew that despite being only 2, I was his 3rd owner and I really wanted to find out his history. I had his leg ring number and assumed I could trace this, to find out where he came from, who bred him, and why his first owner gave him up. I naively contacted the Parrot Society expecting they'd be able to get the information for me. They told me that there is no database, and that the information wasn't available. We have ways of identifying birds that have not been microchipped. We have leg rings and photographs. It's time we started using information.
That's why I created mybirdID. Log your bird, trace one you've found, reunite lost birds with their owners. It's exactly what I was looking for when I first got Caesar, nine years ago.
